The Most Beautiful Beaches in Stara Baška
Stara Baška is home to some of the most beautiful beaches on Krk Island. Along its rugged coastline, you'll find everything from well-known beaches such as Oprna and Zala to tiny secluded coves that can only be reached on foot, by kayak or by boat.
Some are just a few minutes from the village, while others require a little adventure to reach – which is exactly what makes this part of Krk so special. The closest beach to Sunshine Residence is only around 150 metres from the house.
If you prefer a beach with a little more going on, head to Zala, Oprna or Škrila. But if you're looking for peace and a spot almost to yourself, explore the small beaches below the village or follow the coastline until you find your own.
When you're staying in Stara Baška, one of the best ways to explore the coastline is by kayak or SUP. It gives you the freedom to discover small beaches and hidden coves that are difficult – or sometimes impossible – to reach from land.
It's one of my favourite ways to spend a summer day here: pack some water, sunscreen and a few snacks, paddle along the coast until you find a quiet spot you like, and make it yours for the day. A little Robinson Crusoe feeling, just a short paddle from the village.
ZALA BEACH
Zala is one of my favourite beaches on hot summer days, mainly because of the freshwater springs coming down from the mountains. The sea here can be noticeably cooler than elsewhere along the coast – exactly what you need when temperatures rise.
It's also one of the more accessible and lively beaches around Stara Baška, with cold drinks and ice cream available during the summer. It has become increasingly popular, so if you prefer it quieter, come early in the morning or visit outside the busiest weeks of July and August.
OPRNA BEACH
Oprna is probably the best-known beach in Stara Baška – and for good reason. Surrounded by steep, rocky hills and clear turquoise water, it's one of those places that looks just as beautiful in real life as it does in photos.
Getting there takes a little effort. You can walk down the rocky path from the road, but I personally prefer arriving by SUP or kayak. The paddle along the coast is part of the experience – and you avoid the climb back up at the end of the day.
SURBOVA BEACH
Surbova is quieter and less known than Oprna or Zala, partly because reaching it requires a bit more effort. But that's also part of its appeal.
The walk takes you through the rugged landscape surrounding Stara Baška, with beautiful views towards the islands to the south. Once you reach the beach, you can also continue exploring the coastline and discover several smaller coves nearby.
Bring everything you need for the day and wear proper shoes for the walk – flip-flops are definitely not the best choice here.
GOLDEN BEACH
Golden Beach is one of the most dramatic beaches along this stretch of coastline, surrounded by high cliffs that turn beautifully golden in the morning light.
There is no road or walking path to the beach, so you'll need to arrive from the sea. It's a popular stop for boats exploring the coastline around Stara Baška, but arriving early in the morning gives you the best chance of experiencing it before it gets busier.
And if you can, look up. The cliffs above the beach are just as impressive as the water.
ŠKRILA BEACH
Škrila is the easiest choice when you want a little more comfort with your beach day. The beach is located inside Camping Škrila but is also accessible to visitors who aren't staying at the campsite.
You can rent sun loungers, parasols, SUPs and kayaks, and there's a beach bar for drinks and something to eat. We sometimes like to come here in the morning for a coffee and croissant before heading to the beach.
It's a completely different experience from the hidden coves along the coast – and sometimes that's exactly what you want.
BEACHES BELOW THE HOUSES IN THE VILLAGE
Some of my favourite places to swim aren't really beaches you would find on a list at all.
Below the houses in Stara Baška, small paths and staircases lead down towards the sea, where you'll find a series of little pebble beaches and rocky swimming spots. Because there is no day parking in this part of the village, they tend to remain much quieter than the better-known beaches.
Walk around, follow one of the paths towards the water and see where it takes you. With a little exploring, you can often find a peaceful spot with just a handful of people around – or sometimes nobody at all.
One of the things I love most about Stara Baška is that you don't have to choose just one beach. Stay for a few days and you can discover a different one every morning – from the little beaches below the village to Oprna, Zala and the hidden coves along the coast.
